Because a pre-Christmas storm is set to bring freezing temperatures on Friday night, Dec. 23, roads in the county will likely become icy and hazardous, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department announced.

For those who must drive, police are offering the following tips:

  • Slow down and leave space between your vehicle and the one in front of you, as it takes longer to stop on icy roads;
  • Do not suddenly accelerate, brake, or turn, as this can cause your vehicle to lose traction on the ice;
  • Gently brake, and if your wheels lock up, ease off of the brake.

Freezing temperatures will continue until Tuesday, Dec. 27, police said, with temperatures in the low teens in the daytime and single digits overnight. Residents who lose power from the storm are advised to call 211 for information about warming centers, police said.
